Port Everglades is one of the leading cruise ports in South Florida. Every year, the port receives new ships and changes that mean great things for those who like to take trips out of Fort Lauderdale and Hollywood. The South Florida area gets some of the best cruises and this year, some big changes to the port will prove very exciting for locals, staycationers, and visitors alike.
In 2017, Port Everglades came to an agreement with Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines, providing for a longer contract with Royal Caribbean cruise ships. We already get some of the biggest ships in existence coming through our local port, and this agreement came with a huge investment. Over $100 million will be spent to renovate the port! The renovations start this year, and by the end of 2018, we can expect to see more cruise ships going out of Port Everglades.
Cruise Terminal 25 is the terminal that will have all these major changes. So far, Port Everglades has already become home for one of the newest and largest cruise ships: the Celebrity Edge. This is the largest cruise ship in the Celebrity Cruises fleet. Its big feature is the Magic Carpet, which will make an elegant entrance for guests to disembark from the ship at destination ports. It holds up to 90 people and can move from sea level up to the 16th deck of the ship, and moves about the side of the ship while acting like a lounge. This mammoth ship has huge suites, better accommodations, and extensive views with panoramic windows and verandas.
The Celebrity Edge will join Port Everglades in December of this year. This is just one of the new, bigger ships that the upgraded terminal will bring to Fort Lauderdale. Now that the port can host bigger ships, we can expect many more exciting vessels in South Florida.
